Becoming a mother for the first time is undeniably exciting, but it can also be an overwhelming experience. Now, you are responsible not just for your own life, but also for another fragile, precious little human. Here are some pointers on how you can prepare yourself to undertake the passage of motherhood for the first time.
- Do it your way: As a new parent, you may receive lots of unsolicited advice (or even unpleasant comments!) on how to handle your baby. In such a situation, just nod and smile; apply the advice if you think it may help you. Otherwise, trust your instincts as all babies are different and you know your little one the best. However, do listen to the advice from your healthcare professionals!
- Be realistic: Don’t expect that the journey will be a walk in the park. Know that being a mother will totally change your life. Accept the fact that you’re not going to achieve all parenting ideals you may have had before actually being a mother. Don’t sweat the small stuff; as long as your baby is happy and healthy, he/she will be okay.
- Bad days are okay: You are not superhuman and there will be times when you may not be able to cope with everything. Sometimes, there is just simply no way to stop your baby from crying. It is also okay to delay the house chores and take the chance to rest while the baby is napping. On days like these, it would be good to have someone to talk to.
- Find your crew: A strong support system would be a blessing for a new mum. Identify who you can call for advice or a friend to listen to you lament on a bad day. A trusted babysitter is also a crucial part of your support system. Accept any assistance offered!
- Self-care is important: To be able to take care of your baby, you should, first of all, be able to take care of yourself. Your baby is not going to be safe under your care if you’re exhausted, starved or depressed. A healthy and happy mum begets a healthy and happy baby.
- Cherish the moments: The baby stage will pass by in no time and soon you will miss it. Try to enjoy every little bit of it. Take as many photos or videos to document sweet moments during this phase. As the years go by, you and your kids will be happy to revisit and treasure those earlier times in their life.
