Understanding Intelligence

What is Intelligence?

Intelligence is the ability to learn or understand or to deal with new or trying situations – Merriam Webster

Since early childhood, your daughter has been a musical maestro, skillful with several instruments. However, when asked to solve a simple mathematical question, she shies away from you. Your neighbour’s son, on the other hand, has no particular skill that stands out. Yet, he consistently gets good grades and is often called a “bright” student.

At present, there is some controversy about defining and measuring intelligence. There is no one definition of what exactly constitutes intelligence and no one test that can measure the full scope of intelligence. For example, looking at the short descriptions above, both children are believed to be equally intelligent in their own ways.

It is important for adults to recognise and appreciate the ways that their child is “smart”, as different kinds of intelligence allow different people to direct outstanding movies, write great books, or even create world history.
